Born into slavery in Missouri, George Washington Carver overcame a life of difficult and limiting circumstances and became one of the most renowned agricultural scientists in the world. After losing his parents young, Carver was raised by foster parents who recognized his intelligence and encouraged his schooling. Carver demonstrated a strong desire to learn, a fascination with nature, and a great gift for art. Persevering through countless obstacles that stood in the way of his education, Carver eventually received a bachelor’s and master’s degree before taking a job teaching at the Tuskegee Institute.
