This longer picture book is a splendid retelling of the story of David’s encounter with the Philistine warrior, Goliath. The work begins with an introduction to David as a humble shepherd boy who is scorned by his older brothers. When his brothers join King Saul’s army to fight the enemy Philistines, David longs to join them, but in obedience to his father, he remains behind to care for the sheep. With patience, faith, and hope, David waits for an opportunity to be of service to his king. After David demonstrates great courage and kills both a lion and a bear, he is finally permitted to join Saul’s army. Joining Saul’s great army and his brothers, David vows to challenge the terrifying enemy, Goliath. Crediting the Lord with his courage and strength, David is victorious and is greatly rewarded by Saul. Beautifully illustrated with dramatic oil paintings, this work captures the depth and excitement of this well known Biblical tale, as well as the great faith and courage of young David.
