Tico, a bird born without wings is well loved and has many friends who gather food for him, but he dreams of being able to fly. When his wish for golden wings is granted, Tico’s friends become envious and leave him. As Tico moves on, he encounters numerous different people in need, and in each meeting he gives them one of his precious feathers. As each golden feather is given away, it is replaced by a black feather, and when the last golden feather is gone, Tico returns to his friends. Although his friends welcome Tico back because they think he is now like them, both the reader and Tico know that his experience is unique and transformative.
