With simple text and large vibrant illustrations, this picture book tells the story of the Pilgrim’s journey from England on the Mayflower and the difficult first year they endured after settling in the Plymouth Colony. The text details certain hardships experienced, such as food shortages, sickness, and harsh conditions, which sets the stage for the joyful celebration which becomes the first Thanksgiving. After receiving help from Native Americans, including Squanto, the Pilgrims learn to grow crops and live off what the land provides. After a bountiful harvest, the Pilgrims invite many Native Americans to join them in a celebration of thanks. Young readers will find this a great introduction to the origins of our Thanksgiving holiday.
