This Victorian fairy tale tells of the human capacity for greed and destructiveness, as well as generosity and kindness. When the youngest of three brothers, Gluck, generously opens their home to a traveler, his two older brothers become angry and offend the guest. Their malice leads to the destruction of their farm land, and the two older brothers set their greedy eyes elsewhere. Led by the words of the King of the Golden River, the oldest two brothers seek to claim their fortune through a mysterious challenge at the source of the river that sustains their valley. However, their greed leads to their destruction, and Gluck is left to complete the challenge with a generous and kind heart.
