Johnny Orchard lives in a rural valley where every barn proudly displays a bearskin. Feeling embarrassed and determined to bring esteem to his family, Johnny sets out to kill the biggest bear in the woods. His hunt takes an unexpected turn when he finds, befriends, and brings home a bear cub. As the bear grows, its presence in the valley becomes increasingly problematic, and although well intentioned, Johnny soon realizes that the bear cannot stay. His bond with the bear makes finding a solution difficult, and Johnny repeatedly attempts to release him in the woods. In a twist of fate, Johnny finds a solution and bittersweet relief. Award winning illustrations bring both humor and depth to this story about responsibility, friendship, and prudence.
