This historically set American fairy tale tells the story of an idle farmer who escapes his responsibilities and his nagging wife when he inadvertently falls asleep for twenty years. While walking in the Catskill Mountains, Rip meets a group of mysterious men and decides to enjoy a night of merry-making and drinking with them. When Rip wakes he is confused and soon learns that he has slept for twenty years, through the American Revolution, the death of his wife, and the growth of his children. Entirely unconcerned by what he has missed, Rip continues an idle life as the endearing storyteller of the community.
