Another wonderful work by prolific biographer Russell Freedman, this biography shares the life story of Louis Braille, who at the young age of three was blinded, but who used this misfortune to help others. Louis was known for his curiosity, intelligence, and inventiveness, and after becoming frustrated with the established methods of reading for the blind, Braille began to create his own system. As a young student he invented a new system of six dots that would be used to represent letters and numbers. Although a seemingly obvious improvement from the other methods, Braille’s dot system was ignored and rejected by many. However, through his perseverance and steadfastness, he continued to improve and promote his system, and it eventually received the recognition it deserved. His deliberation and life-long perseverance resulted in a reading system that unlocked education and literacy for all the blind throughout the world.
