Set in the Limberlost Swamp area of Indiana, this story follows a nameless, orphaned boy, nicknamed “Freckles”, as he leaves his orphanage in search of work. Handicapped, penniless, and friendless, a determined Freckles seeks work at a lumber company where he is assigned the difficult duty of guarding a large timber area of Limberlost Swamp. Although Freckles is initially terrified of the swamp and its creatures, he soon begins to appreciate its beauty and immerses himself in the natural world around him. In his encounters with timber thieves and criminals, Freckles demonstrates courage, and his dedication and selfless acts earn the respect of his employer, as well as the lovely “Swamp Angel” for whom he has a growing affection. Renowned for its majestic and beautiful depiction of the natural world, this is also a story of courage, faithfulness, friendship, and responsibility.
