Frederick Douglass, growing up as a slave, has many questions. Why is he a slave, why can’t he learn to read like the white boys? He learns that reading is the first step to being free. In this fictionalized first-person narrative, we see him devote himself to learning wherever he can, even trading bread for knowledge. His persistence in the pursuit of knowledge pays off. This is a fine portrayal of his early life.
