This is a classic tale of becoming "real" through faithfulness, perseverance and love. It is the story of a splendid, stuffed rabbit who longs to be real, and is told by the Skin Horse that only happens when all his fur has been loved off and his glassy eyes have fallen out. The Velveteen Rabbit relishes his role as beloved and favored childhood companion through play and illness and stands faithfully by his friend through abandonment. It may be hard (for teachers) to get through this book without shedding a few tears, but the big-hearted, now shabby and discarded rabbit is ultimately rewarded by becoming real.
