This beautifully illustrated picture book tells the story of Juan, a young boy in Capistrano, and his friendship with Julian, the gardener and bell ringer at the mission church. Julian shares many stories of the history of the mission and takes pride in showing Juan the plants of the garden. What brings them the most joy, however, is the return of the swallows to the garden each year. Juan spends his summer closely observing the swallows and delighting in their activity, and when the swallows once again leave, Juan decides to build a garden to welcome them when they return. He works diligently and with care, and his efforts are ultimately rewarded in a joyous return. With alternating full spread illustrations and text, this wonderful story compels the reader to wonder at the beauty and grandeur of nature and to find joy in its detail.
