This simple and lyrical story, paired with beautifully colored illustrations, offers an endearing glimpse at the cyclical nature of life in rural New England during the 19th century. Essential to this way of life is the work of the family, each member honoring their responsibilities toward the whole. Opening with a man gathering up all the goods crafted by his family in order to sell them at the market, the story follows the man as he journeys to the market, sells all he has, and then buys all the provisions needed for his family to prepare for the next market. It is a beautiful depiction of responsibility and moderation lived out.
